After a total of 66 words were presented, a team was named Champion of LVOY’s 23rd Annual Adult Spelling Bee. Congratulations to Team Bee + from Hobart & William Smith Colleges! Team members Leah Himmelhoch, Ruth Benedict, and Judith McKinney correctly spelled the word ‘thurible’ to be the last team standing in the competition.

A thurible is a metal censer suspended from chains, in which incense is burned during worship services. It is also known as a censer. The term is derived from the Latin for “incense.”

This year’s Bee, held remotely via Zoom on Sunday, February 2, was the most successful in the event’s 23-year history, raising a total of $20,000! Proceeds will support LVOY’s work providing literacy tutoring services to local adults.

Two sponsors provided matching gifts to this year’s Bee. Thank you to Nancy Sands and the Halleran Financial Group for being lead matching sponsors.

Thank you also to our other event sponsors:

·       Premier Sponsors: Red Jacket Orchards & The Nicholson Family, and Wegmans.

·       Queen Bee Sponsors: Canandaigua National Bank & Trust and CDGA Coffee Company

·       Worker Bee Sponsors: Darling’s Tree Farm and Hemdale Farms

Special thanks to Andy Thomas, the event's Announcer/Bee Master, as well as all the competitors who stepped forward to put their spelling skills to the test!

The Bee is held every February as a fun way to spotlight the importance of adult literacy.
