What does Literacy Volunteers Ontario-Yates do?
LVOY provides literacy tutoring to adults (age 16 and older) in Ontario and Yates counties. We serve both English speakers and foreign language speakers. We can help foreign language speakers learn English and master pronunciation. We also help them understand our culture so they are able to integrate into the community and understand things more easily. We help English speakers in all areas of English literacy including improving their reading and math skills, understanding financial and digital literacy, and more.
We help learners prepare for their GED, the US Citizenship exam, and other tests. -
How much does it cost?
Tutoring is provided at no cost to learners. The cost of materials, training, staff support, and more is covered through a variety of grants, gifts and donations from people and organizations who value literacy.

How does it work?
Volunteer tutors meet individually with learners at a public location (such as one of our offices, the local library, the park or a diner) at a time that is convenient for both the tutor and learner. Learners are asked to commit to meeting with their tutor for 1.5 hours each week as this is what is necessary in order to improve literacy. Periodic assessments allow LVOY to measure how learners’ literacy skills are improving.
