LVOY’s 22nd Annual Spelling Bee will be held on Sunday, February 4, 2024 from 1 – 5pm. It is being held remotely via Zoom, as it has been for the past few years.
Teams of three compete in rounds. The winner of each round advances to the championship round. Team members have one minute to confer and come to agreement on the spelling of the word they are given. The rest of the Bee runs much like a traditional spelling Bee. Competitors have a spoken word given to them and hear it used in a sentence. They may ask for the word's definition and origin. Then they must present their best guess as to the correct spelling.
It is a fun afternoon of relaxed competition that shines a light on literacy.
“Spelling is just one aspect of literacy, but it’s an important one,” says Liz Searle, LVOY executive director. “The Spelling Bee is a great way for us to increase awareness of what we do while raising money to support LVOY’s work. We couldn’t do it without the support of event sponsors, competitors and volunteers.”
The annual Bee is the largest single fundraising event LVOY holds each year. To participate, registration is $300 per team. The first three teams who submit payment will each receive one free word pass, allowing them to pass on a word they feel uncertain about and be given a new word for a round. The registration deadline is January 22, 2024.
The Spelling Bee is LVOY’s longest running fundraising event. Proceeds support LVOY’s work with adults throughout Ontario and Yates Counties who seek to improve their lives by increasing their literacy.
